When tragedy strikes

Noemi was a woman who had run out of faith and was not very happy with her God. Many years ago her husband had died.  However that was not enough grief. Now her only sons lay dead.  With no money, property or foreseeable source of income, she made the best decision she could. She turned to the only family she had left, her two daughters in law, Ruth and Orpha, and said “Go back, each of you, to your mother’s home. May the Lord show you kindness, as you have shown kindness to your dead husbands and to me. 9 May the Lord grant that each of you will find rest in the home of another husband.” (Ruth 1:8) Noemi kissed her daughters-in–law and believed she would never see them again.
Then they both began to cry and nobody was leaving. They both declared that they weren’t going anywhere. Noemi was not too happy.  Her best plan to save her daughter-in-laws was not working. She explained that she had nothing to offer them and finally convinced Orpha to leave, Ruth would be more challenging. Ruth displayed great courage, stubbornness and faith in God as she declared “Don’t urge me to leave you or to turn back from you. Where you go I will go, and where you stay I will stay. Your people will be my people and your God my God.17 Where you die I will die, and there I will be buried. May the Lord deal with me, be it ever so severely, if even death separates you and me.” (Ruth 1:16-17) Ruth was determined to be loyal to both Noemi and God.  Noemi must have thrown her hands up in defeat. Both women with nothing in this world to call their own would return to Bethlehem or as Noemi would say, ” the Almighty has made my life very bitter. I went away full, but the Lord has brought me back empty.” (Ruth 1:20-21)
It’s easy to understand Noemi’s bitterness. We’re supposed to raise our children and then help them raise their children. Hard work and proper planning is also supposed to provide us with a healthy income deep into our old age. It’s the plan for a whole lot of folks, including me. Then tragedy strikes. God is so merciful He can see us through the most desperate situations.
Although Ruth was a foreigner she found favor in the eyes of one of the most powerful men in Bethlehem, Boaz. He had heard the most improbable story of the foreign girl who had given up her family and homeland to stay loyal to her penniless mother-in-law. (Ruth 2:11-12)He allowed her to work his land and everything Ruth could gather was hers to keep. What would happen next would be a true shocker. Boaz fell in love with this penniless, Moabite woman, and married her. (Ruth 4:13)Noemi became the adopted grandmother of their son Obed, King David’s grandfather, and they all lived happily ever after.
God can take the worst situation and turn it completely around. Although Noemi was bitter and perhaps angry with God, He had a plan and had never forsaken her. God incorporated Ruth, the foreigner into not only David’s blood lines, but Jesus himself, also a descendant of Ruth. In this manner both Jew and Gentile were already included in the plan of salvation. Before we grow bitter consider that God knows what is best, has us in his hands and will surely fulfill his purpose in our lives.

A new hero for the New Year

Imagine being a farmer, like Gideon, out in the country having a nice peaceful time working on his land.  The sun is shining and birds are chirping and all of a sudden a mighty Angel yells out at you “Yahweh is with you, you mighty man of valor!” (Judges 6:11) That would be startling. It would sound a bit insane as well, since you are just a farmer who quite cowardly is busy hiding his grain so that the enemy, the Midianites, won’t take it from you. However, God was getting ready to call Gideon to fight those same Midianites. God was ready to do something new.
Often in our lives we feel ill equipped for the task at hand.  We are sure that someone else could do the job better. But then we find out God is not interested in someone else, He is interested in us.  God sees into our hearts and knows that we are the right person at the right time.
Gideon looked to his flaws and answers God back. Would we dare do that? Maybe Gideon was valiant. However we should save our courage for facing the enemy and reserve our fear for when we face the almighty God. Gideon says “O Lord, how shall I save Israel? Behold, my family is the poorest in Manasseh, and I am the least in my father’s house.” (Judges 6:15)
While mighty men from great families have risen throughout history, God wanted to do something new. He lifted a humble man to greatness. We can be that humble man or woman God lifts up.  Now God was about to get even more radical!
With God’s help Gideon was able to organize an army of 32,000 men. God decided that army was too big. Yeah you heard right, too big! God loves to try new things.  Through Gideon God direct all the men that were fearful to just leave. (Judges 7:3)  Apparently God likes to work with people of courage. Be brave! Now only 10,000 men were left. The army was still too big! Gideon must have been ready to lose his mind. We would be thinking “God have you ever fought a battle? Having more soldiers is a good thing.”
God caused 9,700 men to leave. (Judges 7: 4-7) God was just starting to get creative. He tells Gideon to give the remaining 300, trumpets, empty pitchers, and torches. (Judges 7:16) What happened to the swords?
Gideon now faced an army that the bible describes as follows
The Midianites and the Amalekites and all the children of the east lay along in the valley like locusts for multitude; and their camels were without number, as the sand which is on the seashore for multitude.(Judges 7:12)
Gideon did not run. He was not worried or scared. God had done something new. Listen to Gideon’s declaration to his brave 300, “Arise; for Yahweh has delivered the army of Midian into your hand!”  (Judges 7:15) God had transformed him into a “mighty man of valor.”
The entire Midian/Amalekite army was defeated and sent running for their lives. God created so much confusion they actually killed themselves.(Judges 7:22)
In 2014 God is looking for a few brave men and women that He can lift up to take on the enemy. That problem or challenge can be defeated and God can turn us into “mighty men/women of valor!”

New things and the New Year

Behold, I am doing a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it? I will make a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert. Isaiah 43:19
God loves to do new things. He made a new world and filled it with all kinds of living creatures. (Genesis 1) Then he decided to make unique creatures, in His image. He called them man and woman. (Genesis 1:27)Thousands of years later he saw that their descendants had become corrupt and violent. (Genesis 6:5-8) He decided to do a new thing. He wiped the world clean and started a new civilization with Noah. (Genesis 6:18)Then many years later He decided to do something new again. He called out Abram, gave him a new name Abraham, and told him to start a new nation and a new people. (Genesis 12:1-2,Genesis 17:5) We called them the chosen people. He then called Israel out of Egypt and sent them to the promise land to start a new nation and of course they had to wipe out the old civilization (Canaan) that was there. (Hosea 11:1Joshua 3:10) The Canaanites were not very nice, they would sacrifice their children in fire and used prostitution in their religious ceremonies and had all kinds of gods. (Geneis 38:2, Deuteronomy 12:31,Psalm 106:37-381 Kings 14:24Then he started a new Davidic line of kings from a shepherd boy, of all things. (1 Samuel 16:13)That was definitely a new idea. Yet He wasn’t done doing new things.
Two thousand years ago He decided to do the newest thing of all. He sent His one and only begotten son to do away with all our sins past present and future. He would be the one great sacrifice to replace all other sacrifices. All we had to do was believe in Him and repent of our sins to be saved.(John 3:16)
Now everyone could have a new life. God was making things new everywhere and in everyone. Lots and lots of new things, glory to God! But He was not done. Jesus told his disciples that He was going to make new mansions for us to live in. Now there would be a new place in heaven, for us to live our new lives with God forever. (John14:6)
John prophesied that God was not done doing new things. He said that God was going to make a new heaven and new earth. Then He would make a new Jerusalem. It will be the greatest most beautiful city. It will be perfect in every way and it will be another new home. (Revelation 21:1-5)
If we have had any doubt before on how much God loves to do new things, well we can stop doubting! We can be sure that God wants to start something new in our lives. God is able to remove what is holding us back. He will help us overcome obstacles so that we can achieve new heights. God will give us new talents and abilities. Our Lord will bless our new missions and new ministries. He will show us new methods to take on old problems. With God we will have new and great victories in the New Year!

Jesus gets the leftovers

and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no guest room available for them. Luke 2:7
When Jesus came into this world there was no room for Him in the Inn.  He was born where animals are kept. (Luke 2:7) He was given the leftovers. He had come down from heaven on a rescue mission, where the great idea was for Him to die. There was no escape clause. He was sentenced to die brutally and without mercy, for the love that God has for us. Yet he was given no priority. There He lay where unsightly and smelly animals are kept out of the way.
Jesus preached the good news, went from place to place healing, casting out demons, forgiving sin, counseling, and changing lives.  However he was never given a big church to pastor, a book contract or offered a big Pastoral home, Jesus actually referred to himself as homeless.(Matthew 8:20)
He fed thousands on more than one occasion, raised the dead, walked on water and stilled the storm with a word. But the big network deal for a spectacular show never came. It would have been amazing. It surely would have been a hit.
He was the creator and this world did not recognize him. (John 1:10) He was the promised Messiah to God’s chosen people. He made sure to reach out to them first. (John 1:11) But they rejected him and begged for Him to be crucified. (Luke 23:21)
Jesus is knocking on the door of countless lives. He is the solution for the pain and depression. He is the solution for the empty heart and the troubled mind. But so many still do not give Him a second thought.
Many others like me owe Him everything we have. Including all the hope and peace and joy in our lives. He has saved us! But we often leave him the leftovers. The shopping has been done. The calls have been made. Did we check our email? Good, we took care of that. Dinner is made, and everyone has their Christmas gift. Maybe now we can take some time for our Lord and Savior.  At least He is no longer with the smelly animals in the manger.

The return of Jesus

When Herod the king heard this, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him. Matthew 2:3
They came from long and far and traveled across barren deserts. They were carrying precious cargo and perhaps they encountered dangers. Perhaps they fought of thieves. However they were not deterred, because they knew they had seen a sign. This was the fulfillment of the prophecy, a child born of a virgin that would free all mankind and establish an eternal kingdom. (Isaiah 7:14)
They arrived in Israel. But still did not know where to find him. Possible with great fear, but with little choice they sought the help of King Herod. When the King heard their story he was troubled. Another king to take his place! Of course he was troubled. But why was all Jerusalem troubled? (Matthew 2:1-12)
Why be troubled because the messiah had come? Why be troubled that he who would free all men had come? Why be troubled because He who would set the captives free (Isaiah 61:1), heal the sick (Isaiah 35:5-6Isaiah 29:18), bring light to a generation in darkness (Isaiah 9:1-2Isa. 42:6), and raise the dead had been born? Why be troubled that he who had come to die for our sins had been born (Isaiah 53:5Isaiah 53:10-12)?
Perhaps that generation was no different from ours. Our generation knows what it wants but refuses to recognize what it needs. It wants money, financial security, a mansion, fast cars, big cars, fancy cars, a pension, early retirement, a vacation home, an ipad, a minipad, an iphone, and an ipod.
What does this generation need? This generation needs someone that will bring peace, love and unity. This generation needs someone that will heal our sickness, bodily and mentally. This generation needs someone that can remove worry, and pain and wipe away every tear. This generation needs someone who will wash away our sins and reunite us with our God.
Who will be troubled by the return of Christ? Everyone who likes the status quo, those who have no problem with war, sickness, poverty and a growing inhumanity, is troubled by the return of the King of kings. Everyone who is sure that man will solve man’s problems and government will lead the way.
Herod felt the same way. He was King and in control. He liked things the way they were. I’m sure he thought he didn’t need any help. All of Jerusalem seemed to agree. Jesus is coming and when he arrives how will He be welcomed this time? Will they once again be troubled?

Overeating

Anyone worried about gaining weight over the holidays raise your hand. Wow, that many, really! I know I am. Here is the good news according to the experts it’s not going to happen. They say the average weight gain is one measly pound. Personally I find it hard to believe. But you can read it for yourself in the health articles listed below.
Well, that sounds like a license to eat everything; aunt May’s brownies, grandma’s apple pies, Uncle Jerri’s cream puffs and your sister’s cheese cake. We are going to eat it all, candies, chocolate, ice cream, pudding (Figgy of course) and that is just for desert.  That is what the holidays are for and there is nothing wrong with that.  Eat until it hurts.
Actually there may be a problem. The apostles, Peter (1 Peter 4:7and Paul (Titus 2:1-6 ) call us to be a people of self control. Solomon warns us against gluttony.  He links it with laziness and poverty. (Proverbs 23:21 , Proverbs 23:21) Paul also reminds us that we are the temple of God and we are not to destroy it. He refers to gluttony, eating too much and drunkenness, drinking too much. Paul didn’t need a medical license to explain that these activities only work to harm us and God expects better from his creation. Paul provides a stern warning when referring to our bodies “If anyone destroys God’s temple, God will destroy him.”( 1 Corinthians 3:16-17)
How often have we complained about our health, begged for a miracle, when the solution could very well be, eat right, rest more and exercise?  We are often very busy and life challenges can make it difficult for us to make time for the gym. Without judging, we will just say each person must make his or her choice. However choose how you spend your time wisely, and try to fit in some exercise. When it comes to what we eat, what excuse do we have? We can all eat a little better and we can certainly eat a little less.
This Christmas, we are all going to enjoy some treats. However, remember this holiday in particular is about glorifying God and how Jesus came into this world to give his life that we can be saved, not stuffing ourselves with aunt May’s brownies until it hurts.

Verses

The end of all things is at hand; therefore be self-controlled and sober-minded for the sake of your prayers.

2 TIMOTHY 3:1-3

But understand this, that in the last days there will come times of difficulty. For people will be lovers of self, lovers of money, proud, arrogant, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, heartless, unappeasable, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not loving good,
You, however, must teach what is appropriate to sound doctrine. 2 Teach the older men to be temperate, worthy of respect, self-controlled, and sound in faith, in love and in endurance.
3 Likewise, teach the older women to be reverent in the way they live, not to be slanderersor addicted to much wine, but to teach what is good. 4 Then they can urge the younger women to love their husbands and children, 5 to be self-controlled and pure, to be busy at home, to be kind, and to be subject to their husbands, so that no one will malign the word of God.
6 Similarly, encourage the young men to be self-controlled.
One of the Cretans, a prophet of their own, said, “Cretans are always liars, evil beasts, lazy gluttons.”

PHILIPPIANS 3:19

Their end is destruction, their god is their belly, and they glory in their shame, with minds set on earthly things.

PROVERBS 23:20-21

Be not among drunkards or among gluttonous eaters of meat, for the drunkard and the glutton will come to poverty, and slumber will clothe them with rags.

1 CORINTHIANS 3:16-17

Do you not know that you are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit dwells in you? If anyone destroys God’s temple, God will destroy him. For God’s temple is holy, and you are that temple.

PROVERBS 23:21

For the drunkard and the glutton will come to poverty, and slumber will clothe them with rags.
